Mastitis, Mammary Gland Immunity, and Nutrition

چکیده
Although intensive research and prevention measures have been carried out for decades to control bovine mastitis, it continues to cause the biggest economic impact to the dairy industry worldwide. Severe economic losses, which are estimated to be approximately $200/cow/yr in the United States, are due to reduced milk production, discarded milk, replacement costs, extra labor, treatment, and veterinary service costs (Smith and Hogan, 2001). In addition, mastitis increases the risk of antibiotic residues in milk due to treatments and decreases milk quality due to an increase in somatic cell count, as well as proteolytic and lipolytic enzymes, which increase the enzymatic breakdown of milk protein and fat (National Mastitis Council, 1991).

Innate immunity of the bovine mammary gland.
Understanding the immune defenses of the mammary gland is instrumental in devising and developing measures to control mastitis, the major illness of dairy ruminants. Innate immunity is an extremely broad field for investigation, and despite decades of research, our present knowledge of the innate defenses of the udder is incomplete. Yet, information is being gained on the recognition of pathoge...

The present study investigated the effects of E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced mastitis model in rat on the activity of antioxidant enzyme systems. To achieve this purpose, E. coli LPS were infused into the mammary gland of 12 rats 72 hr postpartum and compared with 12 rats in control group infused intramammary placebo sterile pyrogene – free, physiological saline. The...
متن کاملThe fibronectin-binding proteins of Staphylococcus aureus may promote mammary gland colonization in a lactating mouse model of mastitis.
The fibronectin-binding proteins (FnBPs) of Staphylococcus aureus are believed to be implicated in the pathogen's adherence to and colonization of bovine mammary glands, thus leading to infectious mastitis. In vitro studies have shown that FnBPs help the adhesion of the pathogen to bovine mammary epithelial cells. However, the importance of FnBPs for the infection of mammary glands has never be...
متن کاملRole of neutrophils in protection of udder from infection in high yielding dairy cows
Protection of the mammary gland against mastitis-causing pathogens is mediated by many factors in thegland and blood circulation. The professional phagocytic cells of bovine udder, polymorphonuclearneutrophils (PMN) and macrophages, comprise the first line of defense against invading mastitis pathogens. Most researchers now accept that the PMN is a key factor in the cows’ defense against intrama...
متن کاملThe cytokines of bovine mammary gland: prospects for diagnosis and therapy.
The lack of efficacy of conventional strategies for the maintenance of healthy udders in domestic cattle has prompted studies on the use of cytokines for this purpose. The adjuvant use of recombinant bovine cytokines, such as IL-2, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha, in normal mammary gland, mobilizes innate and acquired immunity. However, stimulated immunity does not prevent or eradicate infection, parti...
